I have always tried different tips and tricks to extend my laptop battery life and with little care it works great. I was able to use my Dell Inspiron 6400 battery for almost 4 years without any hassle. Following are the tips which i followed to extend my laptop battery life and power.

* Charge battery for 12-14 hours when you first use it.

* Fully charge/discharge the batter two to four times to condition the battery.

* If you connect to an electric power for long periods of time you should remove your battery to prevent a constant charging.

* Even if you use AC power most of the time, use the battery periodically to keep it in good condition. Always Unplug your AC adapter when the computer is not in use to prevent overcharging and over heating.

* Charge your battery to full run your laptop on battery power instead of electric power until it is completely out.

* Do not expose the battery to extreme temperatures. Hot batteries will discharge very quickly

* Do not leave your battery in the cold. Cold batteries can’t create very much power and .

* Watch for over heating. This may occur if your laptop fan cannot circulate the air properly when your laptop is sitting on a soft surface like on a bed try to use laptop stands which lifts the laptop 2-3 inches and help in air circulation.

* Watch your battery use. Keep an eye on your battery consumption and know how much power you have remaining. You can use the battery power icon on the system tray to watch battery usage.

* Don’t run programs or devices that you aren’t using or un-necessary devices/software like Wi-Fi device when watching an Movie. Using your laptop to watch movies will drain the battery quickly as well as it will overheat the laptop.

* Decrease the screen resolution and brightness of screen. The screen is one of the largest battery drainers in the system.
